The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular family dog breeds. They are intelligent and easy to train and are absolutely fantastic with children. They love to learn and are just adorable as puppies. They will need a regular groom if you don’t want golden hair all over the house!
The breed originated in Scotland in the mid 1800’s and was bred to retrieve waterfowl and other game on hunts. The breed still possesses its retriever instinct and can be trained to fulfill any number of roles. I have seen dogs of this breed acting as guide dogs, gun dogs, agility competitors and therapy dogs.
The average lifespan is around 12 years, but they can live for up to 14 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.
They usually grow to about 50-60 cm in height and weigh between 30 and 40 kgs in peak condition.
