Wire Coated Fox Terrier
The wire-coated fox terrier is one of my favourite breeds – this is a top dog! Great for absolutely anyone. They can be trained to be precious little things or outgoing outdoor dogs that are into everything.
They come in 2 varieties, the “wire-coated” variety, which is shown on this page and the “smooth-coat” or “short-haired” variety. The wire-coated ones don’t shed too much hair, but will need clipping if you want to get the traditional bearded look of the breed. I have a few friends with wire-coated foxies, and they don’t get their dogs clipped at all – very very cute, and low maintenance!
They are great little guard dogs and so are an excellent choice for older people looking for extra security and companionship, singles, couples or families would also love this breed.
This is also a great pet for an energetic, older child getting their first dog or really anyone with a lot of energy who wants a playful little dog. Foxies really need an owner that will be able to spend a lot of time with them, or they can get quite bored. They are a fantastic family pet for an active family.
The average lifespan is around 12 years, but they can live for up to 15 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.
They usually grow to about 34-40 cm in height and weigh between 7 and 8.5 kgs in peak condition.
