The Greyhound Dog Breed is most famous for its speed and occupation as a track racing breed. They are the outright fastest breed of dog and their bodies are sleek, strong and muscular. Although they are best known as racing dogs, they actually make very gentle, loyal and affectionate pets – I know quite a few people who have greyhounds (that weren’t fast enough) as pets and they are really great dogs. They love to run and need regular exercise.
This breed dates back for over 4000 years and is clearly documented in the ancient drawings on pyramids in Egypt. These dogs tend to be quiet and loving and will spend their time following their owner around as you work around the house, as they love being with people.
They have a smaller cousin, the Italian greyhound, that is a lovely, intelligent, energetic pet for someone wanting a smaller dog.
The average lifespan is around 15 years, but they can live for up to 18 years with the right diet, genetics and lifestyle.
They usually grow to about 62-75 cm in height and weigh between 25 and 35 kgs in peak condition.
